Are You in Job Jail? Audrey LeGrand, Expert Career Strategist and Author, reveals how to get out from under the pressures of underemployment in 2011.
For millions of Americans, the struggle against unemployment is over, but that doesn’t mean they are out of the woods. The phenomenon of underemployment affects nearly twice as many Americans as unemployment, and it can be just as crushing.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, underemployment is a category that includes, but is not limited to, the following categories of workers:
- Unemployed workers who are actively looking for work—this is the official unemployment rate.
- Involuntarily part-time workers who want full-time work but have had to settle for part-time hours.
- Workers in dead-end jobs who want to get a better one, but have given up looking for one.
- Workers who have at least one job, but still cannot make ends meet.
Moreover, the underemployment rate for Americans has leapt from just under 10 percent in 2007 to nearly 18 percent in 2010.
But career expert Audrey LeGrand, author of How To Get Out of Job Jail: Eight Ways To Have The Career You’ve Always Wanted (http://www.audreyblegrand.com), believes that there are ways for people to get out of this “job jail,” and break the bonds of underemployment in 2011.
